Solitude

I took this photo while riding through the Great Karoo in May this year

Two days ago I did a post on the Karoo sky. When my dear friend, Penny, of Snap That asked where the Karoo was, I thought I'd post the above photo and add some information about this beautiful part of South Africa.

The Karoo is a semi-desert region of South Africa. It has two main sub-regions - the Great Karoo in the north and the Little Karoo in the south. It covers almost 400,000 sq km (156,000 sq mi) of southern Africa and characterized by thorn and low scrub vegetation.  Lying between 450 meters and 750 meters above sea level, the Great Karoo is crossed by several rivers that have carved canyons and valleys in their southward descent from the Highveld into the ocean. Another narrow strip of arid savanna lies south of the Great Karoo, between the Swartberg Mountains and the Langeberg Mountains. This high plain, known as the Little Karoo, has a more temperate climate and more diverse flora and fauna than the Great Karoo.

  4. Hi Jo,very informative post as usual. I love the post about the 3 love birds, I wonder how you have the patience to take their photos as birds always fly away as soon as I aim the camera!

  6. Solitude can be beautiful is one is properly prepared for it and/or is with friends who know the area. I'm so glad that my experiences in the Great Karoo, driving southwest of Jo'burg, were with good S. African friends. We drove through Bloemfontaine - and finally to Mpumalanga for a bit of game viewing. I'm really not sure where Mpumalanga is in relation to Jo'burg but I think I'm remembering this correctly! ☻
